Introduction
The Food and Civil Supplies Department was formed in March, 1965 by separating the Supply Department from the Agriculture, Food and Co-operation Department. In December 1977, the management of weights and measures was removed from the Department of Industry, Energy and Labor and brought under the control of the Department of Civil Supplies. The department mainly controls the supply and demand of essential commodities in the open trade as well as matters relating to the public distribution system. The main responsibility of this department is to keep prices stable by enforcing various control orders under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 and to take action on matters relating to weights and measures.
The main objectives of the department
- Target Strengthening Public Distribution System.
- Ensuring easy availability of essential commodities at reasonable rates.
- Creating storage capacity for public distribution system.
- To protect and promote the interests of consumers by implementing the Consumer Protection Act 1986
