Writer Utkarsh Naithani and director Randeep Hooda effectively paint a complete picture of Savarkar’s fear- lessactivism, unwavering patriotism, and eternalded- ication to the great cause of an independent India. Each frame is a tapestry of enlightenment, weaving together the lesser-known chapters of Savarkar’s extraordinary life. Delving deep into the staunch ide ologies that defined Savarkar, the biopic explores his life and ideals, bringing his revolutionary and reformist spirit to the forefront. The narrative is both informa- tive and inspiring, shedding light on lesser-known aspects of Savarkar’s life. Peppered with historical tidbits and people who became martyrs for their role in the freedom strug gle, Swatantrya Veer Savarkar is san eye-opener on many accounts. However, one cannot deny that there are a few glitches, a few instances where the so called facts might come under the scanner for not beingfacts. While many important figures-Bhikaiji Cama, Shyam Verma, Mangal Dhingra, Gopal Krishna Gokhale. Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Anant Kanhere etc crop up at reg ular intervals, it is Savarkar’s faceoffs with Gandhi that are attention-grabbing. Never known to see eye-to-Gandhi and Savarkar interacting with each other at various levels. However, the face off at the fag end of the movie between the two legendary leaders is a rev- elation where Savarkar lays bare his concept of Hindutva, boldly identifying the nation as foremost. Often quoting Bahadur Shah Zafar’s Takht-e-London tak chalegi teg Hindustan ki, “Savarkar makes an impas- sioned plea to delve into the core values of national- ism. Beit his school or college, where he and his broth- er form a secret society called Abhinav Bharat, be it London or Paris, or be it at the most feared jail Kaala Pani, Savarkar continues with his mission of igniting the minds of people to fight for their independence and free India from oppression.

In an enlightening conversation with Barry, the war- den at cellular jail, Savarkar says, “I do not hate Britishers, Thate slavery. “This and many such instances compel viewers to ponder about the contributions, the debates and controversies that still surround the name of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. In the tumultuous times of a a nation nation yearning for liberation, Hooda, through the eponymous character in a never-seen-before avatar, breathes life into the revolutionary character’s life with a raw intensity. In his stellar portrayal of a ground-breaking activist who doesn’t shy away from calling a spade a spade and who doesn’t want to play in the hands of other wily politicians who are willing to divide thenation, Hooda effectively and efficiently brings out the complexities of Savarkar’s character, from his fiery speeches to his moments of vulnerability. Especially mention worthy is his transformation when he is housed in the cellu- lar jail. The supporting cast Amit Sial as Vinayak’s eld- er brother and Russell Banks as the horrendous war- den shine in their roles, adding layers of depth and emotion to the cinematic narrative.

Unfortunately Ankita Lokhande is totally wasted. between the characters involved. The brutality inflict- ed on the inmates in the cellular jail is heartbreaking Savarkar’s steadfastness even during these exacting times defines courageousness, and his devotion towards his Motherland exemplifies inspiration. Reliving history in the three hours, Hooda rakes up important issues about our freedom movement, the roles played by many important figures even if they are sketchy, they do bring back memories of having read about them in books or watched them in various docudramas-the sacrifices made by many, some whose names are etched in history, others unsung yet who made significant contributions towards the move- ment. The narrative is powerful enough to start a con- versation and reflect on Savarkar’s legacy, a legacy that is relevant even in today’s times. Watch Swatantrya Veer Savarkar for not only its captivating storyline, though it takes time to catch on, but also for igniting pride and respect for a figure so often sidelined in the annals sof of our ir freedom struggle. Inspired by Savarkar’s selfless service to the nation,
former PM late Atal Bihari Vajpayee had said of him, Savarkar maane tej, Savarkar maane
