United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) About :

Since its inception in 1972, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has been the global authority that sets the environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

UNEP’s mission is to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.

Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, UNEP works through its divisions as well as regional, liaison and out-posted offices and a growing network of collaborating centres of excellence.

UNEP works closely with its 193 Member States and representatives from civil society, businesses, and other major groups and stakeholders to address environmental challenges through the UN Environment Assembly, the world’s highest-level decision-making body on the environment.

The organization hosts the secretariats of many critical multilateral environmental agreements and research bodies.

The Executive Director and Senior Management Team lead the implementation of UNEP’s Medium-Term Strategy (MTS). The four-year MTS articulates UNEP’s role in delivering the promises of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) as well as its outcome document, “The Future We Want.”

UNEP supports Member States to ensure that environmental sustainability is reflected in development and investment planning and provides countries with the necessary tools and technologies to protect and restore the environment.

Through its campaigns, particularly World Environment Day, UNEP raises awareness and advocates for effective environmental action.

UNEP categorizes its work into seven broad thematic areas: climate change, disasters and conflicts, ecosystem management, environmental governance, chemicals and waste, resource efficiency, and environment under review.

Its work is made possible by partners that fund and champion the mission. UNEP depends on voluntary contributions for 95 per cent of its income.

Eligibility Criteria For United Nations (UN) Job Openings 2022 | UNEP Job Opening 2022

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area is required.

Experience in managing public information and communication role at the international level is required.

Experience dealing and implementation of large communications campaigns is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English and French is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Responsibilities For UNEP Job Vacancy 2022

• Takes the lead in strategy, planning, development and implementation of large, complex communications campaigns including global promotion initiatives, public information programmes for the region; works with UNEP headquarters to develop ways to implement campaigns system-wide and to incorporate the campaign message and themes into all relevant events and products including social media.
• Provides advice and expertise to managers, senior officers and other staff on a range of public affairs issues, methods, and approaches; anticipates and resolves communications and public relations issues.
• Writes speeches, speaking notes, media advisories, and other content for the use by media; drafts and edits regional reports, press releases, media advisories and other written outputs; coordinates the development of key messages and themes for major regional events to promote relevant policy or environmental messages.
• Develops strategic partnerships with key constituencies to elicit support for and maximize impact of promotional objectives; serves as a spokesperson to media organizations, governmental bodies, national groups, private sector organizations, educational organizations, international organizations;
• Evaluates results and impact of communications activities; reports on developments, trends and attitudes regarding the UNEP in the region; builds information networks, plan and oversee maintenance of publicly accessible information materials on UNEP; plans and develops outreach activities including capacity building for journalists through workshops and training and social media engagement.
• Identifies sources and seeks funding and other assistance for major campaigns in the region.
• Represents the regional office in meetings and conferences; fulfills speaking engagements and makes presentations to groups on UNEP activities and advocate issues of concern; organizes media coverage and arranges for media contacts, briefings, interviews; organizes seminars, lectures, conferences, public events on major issues environmental and events.
• Supports and advises on media interview requests for country offices.
• Manages the operation of the unit to include participating in coordination of substantive and administrative activities of the unit; provides procedural advice and prepares human resources plans and budget submissions.
• Perform other duties as required.
